Happy Feast of St.Nicholas! In the Steps of St.Nicholas...So how do you plan to make a difference in someones life this Christmas?

Today December 6th we celebrate the Feast of St.Nicholas. Most of what we know about this man is through word of mouth, but he must have been a special man because his name and legend have survived hundreds of years.
One of the most well known legends states that Nicholas was born in the 3rd century to two wealthy parents who raised him as a devout Christian. He later became Bishop of Myra where he became well known for his kindness to all who needed it,love of children and constant concern over sailors and ships.
One story tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a young woman's father had to offer prospective husbands something of value—a dowry. The larger the dowry, the better the chance that a young woman would find a good husband. Without a dowry, a woman was unlikely to marry. This poor man's daughters, without dowries, were therefore destined to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, on three different occasions, a bag of gold appeared in their home-providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left before the fire to dry. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas. Sometimes the story is told with gold balls instead of bags of gold. That is why three gold balls, sometimes represented as oranges, are one of the symbols for St. Nicholas. And so St. Nicholas is a gift-giver.
During his lifetime he lived under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. He died December 6, AD 343 in Myra and was buried in his cathedral church, where a unique relic, called manna, formed in his grave. This liquid substance, said to have healing powers, fostered the growth of devotion to Nicholas. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration, St. Nicholas Day, December 6th (December 19 on the Julian Calendar).
Whatever truth his story holds,he was a man who had an impact strong enough for his legacy to survive the test of time. His story and legend teaches us to try to do our best to help those around us without expecting anything in return. During this Christmas season let's all make an effort to do the little things that will help make our world a better place. As hard as we all have it,someone is always doing worse. From a smile to cup of coffee let's do our best to make a difference in our world today. In honor of St.Nicholas I invite you to leave a comment telling us how you plan to make the world a better place! One person from the comments section will be randomly selected 12/09 at 12:01 am and will win a 5.00 Starbucks gift card :)
So how do you plan to make a difference in someones life this Christmas?

Hmmmmm....gotta think about that one....does having a baby count?

It will make a difference in a few people's lives....

Nice post.

I thought I left a comment the other day about the immunization thing, but then don't think it worked for some reason...I probably got distracted or something. We don't immunize either and I'm dreading the nurses at the hospital when I tell them I don't want the Gonnaria (sp?) goop they put on the baby's eyes....

I plan on making the world a better place by donating not only money but more of my time towards environmental causes and rethinking how I can live greener and participate in more eco friendly campaigns with friends and family to help spread the message to take care of animals, the earth and each other. Thanks for the chance! :)
