Cloth Diapering on the Go!

One question I always get when people find out that I cloth diaper is, How can you possibly cloth diaper when you are out? I mean how is it you keep the dirty diapers? That's a perfectly logical question, considering I had no idea what the answer was when I first began to cloth diaper. Frankly, the idea of cloth diapering while out scared me! It was an easy thought to have all my materials here nicely set up in my house, but what was a busy mama of (3 at the time) to do?

Believe it or not the idea is more daunting than the reality and it's almost become second nature for me to go out with my cloth diapers. As parents we tend to over pack when going out into the "world" because we always feel we are going to be caught unprepared. At this point in the game for me it's become easy to just have a purse/diaper bag when going out with the munchkins.

My purse usually consists of a change of clothes for the baby, and another for bummie since she still has her occasional accident.I also carry a few snacks and the rest is my wallet, and odds and ends. As for the diapering it all fits nicely in my wet bag.
I will usually throw in a few diapers, cloth wipes, and regular wipes in case I don't have access to water. I also carry around a little squirt bottle with my own wipe solution but I am all out right now.

Once I use the first diaper I usually go ahead and put the rest of the diapers in my purse and store the dirty ones in the wet bag. Sometimes I also carry a smaller wet bag inside of it to put the soiled diapers as well.

When out and about I can usually just strap the wet bag on the stroller(it snaps on and off) and get all my stuff done.  This works great for me and I'm sure you can do tweaking to fit your needs. It's super handy to have a wet bag even if you don't cloth diaper just to put soiled clothing in from our little ones. You can buy wet bags in all sizes to meet your needs!

Cloth diapering can be very simple if you learn to think outside the box. It's really not hard at all and even going out can be something easy to do Cloth diapers and all.

I have always wondered this too.

Great advice! How about long holidays away from home? Is it possible to cloth diaper when away from home for a week?

Wow. Great post. I don't cloth diaper yet but want to with baby #2. Out and about was always a big scare for me. They way you put it it's really not much more work than regular diapers. Hmmmm. Either way I am getting a wet bag. Super handy!!!

I always take tons of diapers but usually only use 1 or 2. What brand are the snap wet bags, all mine have handles, but no snap.

It's honestly not too hard to do it while you are out and about. You can even keep grocery bags in your diaper bag and they can hold your dirty diapers. I keep extras in the car too. I haven't had a poopy diaper while we have been out though, so I can't say much about that. Thanks for the tips though!

I love AI2 systems for on the go. Less stuff to shove into the diaper bag. And with two in cloth diapers, my bag is pretty stuffed. Four diapers (two for each kid), a wet bag and wipes.

This has been my biggest concern about cloth diapering. Great Tips!

Thanks for this post - makes it seem not so scary to leave the house! I like the idea of disposable liners as well to help make big messes more manageable

I use disposable liners when out and about it makes it so much easier. A good wet bag is awesome to have for this. It took me a little longer to use cloth wipes while out but I love it now.

I've been really bad about cloth diapering while I'm out lately. I like to travel light so I've been using sposies. But I just ordered 2 really cute wetbags so I may start doing it again :)

When I first had my daughter, I thought cloth diapering on the go would be a huge hassle. Turns out, it's not. I didn't mind it at all.

I love being able to use cloth when out and about, wetbags are amazing! The nice thing about having cloth wipes when you are out is they are so much better at cleaning up messy babies than flimsy disposable ones! I have a planetwise wipes bag and it's awesome for holding dampened wipes.

This sounds easy enough! It seems it basically starts as carrying as much as you would for disposables (except for the squirt bottle). But do you rinse/spray the diapers while out- or clean them in any way? If so- how? And do they create an obvious stink that you carry around with you?

I know when I first started going out I was so intimidated by what to do, especially if baby pooped. But I quickly realized it isn't any different than if I used sposies. Only difference is I keep the diaper with me. I also keep a few diapers in the car just in case lol

I like your idea of having a smaller wet bag to put in the medium one to keep certain things separated!

I do this same thing! Only time I will use disposables is on longer trips without access to laundry.

I really feel that cloth diapering on the go is no different than with disposables. I always have a diaper bag packed with a couple diapers, a wet bag, and wipes. It's that simple :)

I love using cloth diapers when I'm on the go. I pack amazingly light, so that helps. :-) AI2 diapers that fit both of my kids are my preference for the diaper bag.

I need to get one of those wet bags. I've usually ended up putting mine in a plastic bag to take home for later, but I'd prefer something that I can wash and confines the smell!

I LOVE my Wet bags! Even when I was done cloth diapering Bummie(my 3rd) I still took my wet bag everywhere because it was so perfect for storing dirty or wet clothes :) I also use to carry a change of clothes for all the kids and just left it in the care in case of an emergency :)

Thanks for the post--as a newbie to cloth diapers, these kind of posts are AWESOME right now :) I am taking it allll in and waiting on my little man's arrival! Just 3.5 weeks to go!

ConservamomE said...

You will do just great! It's all about trial and error and figuring out what works best for you :) Good luck! You are almost at the finish line! :)

Eww! Yup that about sums up my experiences. I've also become an expert car/diaper changer. So I try to plan diaper changes when stopping at the car (ie if we are going to another store,etc..) or I plan with more absorbent diapers if we are going to be a bit.

lol! me too!!

I prefer to use my cloth diapers when I am out. I especially like it at other peoples houses since I flush the poop and take the diaper with me. I hated asking where my friends wanted me to put a stinky disposable diaper before I used cloth. Like they actually wanted me to put it anywhere in their house, lol.

ConservamomE said...

You know that is one of the reasons I also love cloth diapering. No one wants our stinky diapers! lol

ConservamomE said...

So true! I wish someone would have told me how easy it was when I first started! lol

We've got our 4th baby on the way, and have been cloth diapering on the go for quite awhile, agree with what you wrote on all of this! Good reminders.

Thanks! & Best wishes on the upcoming birth of #4! :)

When I started cloth diapering I only used disposables when we were out and about because it intimidated me for some reason. Once I got more comfortable with CD I decided to use them out and haven't gone back. Love it!

ConservamomE said...

It is SOO intimidating to go out with them but you're right it's scarier than it really is!

Thank you for the encouragement. Cloth diapering has been a bit daunting. Using cloth outside our home made me even more nervous. I'm loving it though! Cloth diapering on the go has been so much easier than I expected.

Great post! "How do you do it out and about?" is the cd question I get most often. Thank you for addressing this!

I know it seems silly to say, but I've never considered just snapping the wet bag to the stroller. I haven't started to use cloth yet either since our little man is arriving any day now. I just assumed I would put the wet bag with soiled back into the diaper bag, but strapping it to the stroller does seem more easily accessible, and with two older kids in tow, probably a better option for me.

I will be CD with my first in Dec and love reading posts about successful CDers in all situations. I was nervous as first but with the ease of AIO diapers it shouldn't really be any different. Thanks for your tips!
